Rick Barry started and hosts an email-based songwriting challenge, and my first challenge when I joined the group in November 2013 was to use the two words randomly chosen for that week, "blind" and "pilot". If you know Rick, it's not surprising his own disclaimer for his submission was, "Hey guys, Here's mine. Shitty piano playing and shitty recording. But you know."
This was the first time I had written a song this way, and to be honest, haven't really used this method since (for no particular reason). But having a quick deadline, not overthinking the topic, since it's random (stream of consciousness) knowing your peers are doing it with you, and knowing the song doesn't have to bee "good", really allowed me to explore. I'm so glad my own Blind Pilot which is on my 2016 album, "The Gleaner" (recently, beautifully covered by Rick & friends) was something that stuck around. I guess it was beginner's luck. Rick's final product, Blind Pilot #5, is in fact, not shitty. And that cell phone recording turned into a full-band rendition on his album, "A Sunk Cost Fallacy and the Enduring Mirage". To bring it all full circle eight years later, Rick has covered my song, and now I'm covering his. I'm lucky to have artists in my life like Rick who trust me to take their art and project some of my color onto it. Shout out to Mark Masefield and Francis Valentino for believing in our crazy selves and making sure there's evidence this all happened.

lyrics
Lyrics
When you feel you’re about to fall
And you wake in the night, afraid of losing it all
A fear washes over you
You feel like the race is over and you’ve got nothing left to lose
And you cry out to God
Just like you’ve forgotten
That magical lie
When long ago you lost that light
Like a pilot going blind in the middle of the flight.
Like a pilot going blind in the middle of the flight.
You try to hide the fear
Day to day you do your best to stay far from clear
As if you had a choice
When your lips start to go dry, your eyes start to go moist.
And you dance in your head
Like you’re trying to forget
That magical lie
But long ago you lost that light
Like a pilot going blind in the middle of the flight
Like a pilot going blind in the middle of the flight
